The impressive Tectonic Arena Sardona offers a great variety of fabulous biking and hiking trails and is listed as UNESCO World Natural Heritage.

Twice a year in March and October the sun shines spectacularly through the 19 m wide, round rock fissure Martinsloch (Martin’s gap) directly on the church tower of nearby Elm.

In the past, the Viamala ("Via Mala" literally means "bad path") was considered to be a major obstruction on the arduous journey across the Alps.

Ascending the Jura heights is no mean feat from Biel thanks to funicular rail, and scenic views from Magglingen are yours to enjoy in as little as seven minutes.

Biel’s harbour is a great starting point for attractive excursions, including trips on the lakes and rivers. Close-up views of the town of Soluthurn, Island of St. Peter and Neuchâtel and Murtensee lakes (three lakes trip) are just a couple of ideas. Don’t miss out on a fine drop of wine in one of the picturesque little wine making villages!

Biel is also a great place for cyclists, with diverse routes leading in all directions. The more sporty visitors can test their strength against the Jura heights, while trips on any of the lakeside paths offer a more leisurely pace. Highly recommended for families are rides through the rural landscape near the lakes, where miles and miles of enjoyment are yours to reap on attractive rides with little traffic.

Not far from Bern you will find an expanse of vast wooded areas with quaint villages, divided by deep canyons.

The area is specially preserved countryside and a designated “Regional Nature Park”, offering visitors plenty to discover. Besides the rare flora and fauna, there are numerous highlights for sports enthusiasts.

Those who prefer a slower pace can savor the many products from the Gantrisch region or recharge at places of culture.

Bern’s oldest landmark majestically welcomes visitors to the city. The bell on the 13th-century Clock Tower (Zytglogge) has steadily struck the hours for more than 600 years. Inside the tower, however, time seems to have stood still.

Scale the medieval clock tower up a steep spiral staircase, past the historic clockwork mechanism to the bell chamber. Emerging at the top, you are greeted by a unique view of Bern’s winding alleyways and rooftop landscape.

The Parliament Building is the seat of the Swiss government (Federal Council) and parliament (National Council and Council of States).

The Parliament Building was completed in 1902. The central domed hall and both chambers feature numerous symbolic renderings of Swiss history.

More than 344 steps lead up to the Cathedral (Münster) viewing platform, the highest steeple in Switzerland. Having climbed to the top, visitors discover a magnificent view of the alleyways of the Bern Old Town, stretching as far as the Bernese Mittelland and to the snow-covered peaks of the Bernese Oberland.

Since 1782, the Marzili has been the largest and most frequented river pool in Switzerland. Bathers have enjoyed swimming in the “academic swimming baths”, as the Marzili used to be called, for 700 years.

This tradition survives into the present day, and while above the Marzili, the colourful city life pulsates, the clear water of the Aare river is wonderfully suited for a refreshing experience. This unforgettable experience is totally free of charge.

As legend has it, the city of Bern was named after the first animal the city’s founder was able to hunt down in the woods. In 1513, Bernese citizens returning from battle brought a live bear with them and put him in one of the city’s pits, giving birth to a tradition that lives on to this day.

Since then, Bern’s famous Bear pits have given way to the spacious, green BearPark. Needless to say, the citizens of Bern are very fond of their bears.

The Rose Garden is a generously arranged park with a fantastic view of Bern’s Old Town, enclosed in a loop of the Aare river. It is a popular meeting point for locals and visitors alike.

The pavilion and the reading garden offer idyllic spots to relax. The lawns provide enough space for those who love being active whilst the Rose Garden restaurant (Restaurant Rosengarten) provides refreshments with a perfect postcard view of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Since June 20, 2005 the Zentrum Paul Klee has exhibited the world‘s most important collection of works by Paul Klee, totaling over 4000 exhibits in all, or 40% of his lifetimes body of work.

The centre presents many different aspects of the Klee collection, putting on attractive temporary exhibitions, exploring art for younger audiences at the Children’s Museum Creaviva.

Concerts area also organised, along with plays and other events such as running a multifunctional and multimedia Museum Street for visitors to stroll down, interact and enjoy a break.

When it’s hot outside, a sip of cool drinking water from one of the many fountains in Bern promises revitalization, and a cool dip in the Aare river is sure to refresh you.

The most famous of all free-admittance bathing facilities in Bern is the Marzili, situated on the Aare river bank directly below the Parliament Building. Young and old alike, families and even politicians, all meet here in the summer for sports and recreation.

The easiest way to travel the 30-meter difference in altitude from Bern’s Old Town down to the banks of the Aare in the Marzili Quarter is to ride the Marzili funicular, built in 1885; covering a vertical distance of 106 m.

This journey from Canton Bern into Canton Valais takes the classic century-old mountain route to Brig. Numerous hiking and excursion opportunities present themselves along the way, the most spectacular sights including the impressive 265-metre long Kander viaduct.

At the gateway to the Bernese Alps is Thun, the tenth largest city in Switzerland. The old town is intact and has splendid building and squares and towering above it is the impressive Zähringer Castle. A stroll through the famous alleys of the old town is a remarkable experience.

The heart of the region is Lake Thun. A nostalgic steam ship still plies its deep-blue waters. At the lakeside, the villages of Spiez and Oberhofen can look back on a particularly long tradition of wine making. The sunny slopes at Lake Thun are considered to be the Riviera of the Bernese Oberland, and quite rightly so.

Nestling as it does among hills and vineyards, Spiez tempts the visitor to stay a while and enjoy its mild climate. Its central location makes it not only easily and rapidly accessible, but also an ideal starting point for excursions to many places of interest in the Bernese Oberland, as well as the rest of Switzerland.

In terms of sports and culture there is much in and around Spiez for holiday-makers or conference participants to enjoy.

The picturesque village Brienz lies in a delightful mountain setting at the eastern end of Lake Brienz and its turquoise waters.

Brienz is famous for its long tradition of woodcarving and to this day boasts a woodcarving school and a violin-making school. Brienz is also the starting point for excursions to the Ballenberg Open Air Museum and the Brienzer Rothorn.

On the opposite side of the lake the Giessbach Falls with their thundering water masses are a stunning attraction.

The Haslital is located in the famous alpine passes of Grimsel, Susten, Grosse Scheidegg and Brünig. Friendliness, diverse leisure and sporting activities and traditional cultural are characteristic of our holiday region in the heart of Switzerland. Traces of Sherlock Holmes can be found all over Meiringen, the capital of the Oberhasli Region. The Sherlock Holmes trail in the centre of Meiringen will tell you everything you need to know about the master detective. You’ll find valuable old artefacts and exciting background information in the nearby Sherlock Holmes Museum.

Meiringen is the perfect starting point for outings in the whole Haslital as e.g. to the Aare gorge, the Alpen tower, the Open-air museum Ballenberg and the Gelmer funicular. Enjoy the spectacular views in the Haslital!

The village of Mürren, at the base of the Schilthorn, is a cosy, alpine village with chocolate box chalets and the charm of a carfree place.

The village lies on a sunny plateau high above the Lauterbrunnen valley and is considered to be the cradle of winter sports: 100 years of snow sports was celebrated here in 2012. The Inferno ski race and Inferno triathlon are two annual events which are closely tied to Mürren.

Mürren and the Schilthorn were locations for the James Bond movie “On her majestys secret service” in the late 60’s and the daredevil secret agent has significantly contributed to the world-wide success of Schilthorn – Piz Gloria. The mountain, with fantastic panoramic views and revolving restaurant, is one of the highlights of the Jungfrau Region.

The “valley of 72 waterfalls” is an unbelievable sight, with steep cliff walls that seem to rise up to the sky and many enthralling waterfalls.

On the outskirts of Lauterbrunnen, the Staubbach waterfall lives up to its name in spring, when the thundering waters spray up into the air when it hits the valley floor. This famous landmark of Lauterbrunnen even inspired the world famous German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to write a poem about it. It is also said that J. R. R. Tolkien was inspired by the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Authentic traditions are an integral part of village life and the age-old handicraft of lace making (Spitzenklöppeln) is still practiced by a number of villagers.

Lauterbrunnen is the perfect starting point for outings in the whole Jungfrau Region.

Just a stone's thow away from Gstaad lies Zweisimmen - the gateway to the region's attractive hiking area.

The Rinderberg links the village to Saanenmöser, Schönried and St. Stephan. Furthermore, Sparenmoos guarantees fun for young and old alike with a scooter run right into the valley.

An innovative and unique project. Where the skiers go in winter becomes, in summer, the scene of hanging ski lift bells producing a melody when the ski lift is in operation. This spectacle may be heard and seen 2-3 times per day.

The daredevil secret agent has significantly contributed to the world-wide success of Schilthorn – Piz Gloria, as the mountain was one of the locations for the James Bond movie “On her majestys secret service” in the late 60ties.

Since end of June 2013 the world of James Bond is experiencing a revival with the interactive exhibition BOND WORLD 007, including seven key scenes from the movie. There is also an in-house cinema, too.

You can also enjoy the best view of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau from the world’s first revolving mountain restaurant. Also new is the PIZ GLORIA VIEW platform with view to the revolving restaurant as well as Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau!

During the whole year the Schilthorn and the cosy village Mürren offer a wide range of activities: hiking and biking in summer and skiing and sledging in winter.

In Niesen some measure their stamina once a year on the world’s longest stairway (11'674 steps). Most prefer to hike at their own pace on the 1,643m pyramid-shaped mountain or even enjoy a relaxing trip up to the summit by funicular.

The 360-degree panorama from the viewing platform at the top offers impressive view over the Bernese Alps, Lake Thun, Lake Brienz as well as the whole Bernese Mitteland all the way to the Jura mountains.

Experience a nostalgic ride aboard the steam railway where it overcomes the climb up 1,680m all the way up to the Brienzer Rothorn.

It takes around an hour for the small steam locomotive to push the red scenic carriage uphill from Brienz passing through meadows and woods past towering cliffs.

Once at the top of the Brienzer Rothorn a magnificent view over the Alps of Central Switzerland and the peaks of the Bernese Alps awaits.

This historic hotel from 1840 has the best panoramic location on the Scheidegg Pass with fantastic views of the Eiger. The building, its interior and its guest list are steeped in history, while the hotel is also famous for being the location where "The Eiger Sanction" starring Clint Eastwood was filmed.

Departing from Interlaken Ost, your destination is Europe’s highest-altitude railway station at 3,454m. The views are simply stunning, with eternal ice and snow as far as the eye can see and including the mighty Aletsch Glacier (at 23 kilometres the longest in the Alps).

Inside the mountain, see the “Alpine Sensation” – an impressive exhibition which was opened in 2012 to celebrate the centenary of the Jungfrau Railway.

The ‘Tour des Dents-du-Midi’ is a pioneering hike of the Valais inaugurated in 1972, and owes its reputation to the marathon that has been run here for almost 40 years. You may organise the stages of your walk as you wish, using the various huts along the route for accommodation, to eat meals in or simply to buy refreshments. Champéry and the Portes du Soleil also offers exceptional mountain biking opportunities with 24 lifts are open during the summer season.

The village of Champéry houses one of the last ten bell foundries in Switzerland. In a small and dark workshop in the center of the village, father and son perpetuate alpine traditions when farmers gave their cows a bell in order to identify them in the fog or darkness. The bells are also symbolic, being marked with a divine cross in so as to bless pastures and protect animals from evil spells.

The bronze bells are now a symbol of the region and an authentic souvenir that delights tourists and collectors alike. Passionate about casting bells, Mr. Perrin keeps the craft alive, using traditional tools and methods and manufactures about 200 bells a year. Each bell sounding out the unique sound that characterizes it.

For performance and thrills, the Verbier-La Tzoumaz Bikepark is the ideal place to give free rein to your passion! Experts and beginners alike can pit their skills in this challenging arena.

Seven trails for all levels of difficulty will lead you to discover the delights of downhill biking amid exceptional scenery, with an altitude difference of up to 700m. The less experienced will benefit from tips from the mountain bike school to perfect their riding and refine their style and technique.

Alternatively explore the mountain with just a few pushes of a pedal by hiring an electric mountain bike. Ride to the peaks effortlessly with the whole family or with your mates and enjoy every minute.

The holiday village is only a 2 hours’ drive from Geneva airport and 25 minutes from Sion, capital city of the Valais and the oldest town in Switzerland. During the summer hikers will find more than 250km of hikes and walks and for cyclist more than 200km of mountain bike tracks await them.

The region also offers 98km of walks, along 8 ‘bisses’ (irrigation canals) of which 6 have water flowing within their banks. Each summer, the enchanting Nendaz provides the stage for the Valais Drink Pure Alphorn Festival and welcomes more than 100 participants of different nationalities. Alphorn initiation courses and visits to alphorn makers are organized regularly. On the spacious meadow high above Nendaz, 150 men and women stand in a circle, each holding an alphorn: the tension is palpable. A bell rings, and the air is filled with sounds from another century. This extraordinary performance is the highlight of the Valais Drink Pure Alphorn Festival that takes place over three days each summer in this village high above the Rhone valley, framed by some of the Alps’ highest peaks.

Throughout the year, too, this hauntingly beautiful instrument features prominently in the life of Nendaz, offering a chance to try it yourself . Take a single lesson or a week-long course, from beginner level upwards. You’ll discover that the sound you make depends on the alphorn’s material, thickness and shape, and of course the way you work your lips: the greater the tension, the higher the tone.

The sunny trails of the Hannig are a hiker's paradise and many themed trails start from here.

Relax on the sun terrace of Hannig mountain restaurant (2 350 m) while the kids have fun in the indoor and outdoor play areas. And if you're lucky you might even see some chamois or Alpine ibex.

Thanks to its topography Valais has the ideal conditions for using water power. At the beginning of the seventies almost 90% of the country’s energy production was already provided by hydro electric power. Following Switzerland’s decision to withdraw from atomic energy the great reservoir works once again became highly significant.

Grande Dixence (pictured right) is the most famous reservoir in Valais. It is the tallest gravity dam in the world and lies at the head of the Dix Valley. In every respect it is a record holder. The height of the dam wall, 285m, has never been exceeded; it weighs 15 million tonnes and is higher than the Cheops Pyramid. At its base the dam wall is 200m wide and at its crown it tapers off to 15m.

Grande Dixence can be visited from mid-June to mid-September. There are four guided tours per day through the interior of the wall. A wealth of fascinating and scientific information is available from the information pavilion and at the top of the dam wall which can be reached on foot or by cable car.

The Valaisan hydro-electric energy park also includes such large reservoirs as Mauvoisin (in panorama), Mattmark, Emosson and Gougra. However the small reservoirs are also of great economic significance to individual districts. Many of the lakes can be hiked around and offer an impressive counterpart to the natural mountain lakes in the Valaisan Alps.

A hike to an idyllic mountain lake must be one of the most wonderful experiences that you can enjoy in the Alps. Hikers can take an invigorating swim in the cold water or at least cool their tired feet.

The lake near Derborence is one of the loveliest to visit. In 1714 and again in 1749 there were two huge landslides from Les Diablerets. The 100m high mass of debris created a lake that for a long time was considered as a curse so nature was left to spread out unhindered. Today the wild Derborence Valley is protected.

There are around a dozen mountain lakes in the Binn Valley landscape park. Halse Lake, set in a moorland landscape of national significance, is particularly beautiful and easy to reach. The blue lake at Riederalp provides plenty of enjoyment for families. It is situated at 2207m altitude and the water can reach 20 degrees in summer. There is free access to the lake and the possibility to have a barbecue. This lake also has breathtaking views of nearby 4000m peaks such as the Weisshorn, Matterhorn and Dom.

Taney lake is in a picture book setting cradled between the twin peaks of the “Jumelles”, Grammont and the Taney Pass. It is a small paradise at 1,500m high above the Rhone Valley and has been a nature reserve since the sixties.

Stelli Lake near Zermatt is another idyllic spot which is only a 20-minute walk from Blauherd station. The most prominent side of the Matterhorn is reflected in the waters of the lake making it one of the favourite photo subjects in the region.

Corviglia snow sports area is home to World Cup races, gourmet restaurants, and the latest developments in snow sports.
